If you have read my first interiors post to my blog, ‘Hallway & Landing Mood Board Inspiration’ (which I have linked at the end of this post if you haven’t read it already) you will know that I purchased a mirror from the range for a bargain price of £57.99.
Unfortunately the mirror only came in an off white shade and I was after a matt black style. When looking online for a black version I noticed how expensive they were like this one from Olivias for £120.00. So I decided to paint the cheaper version from The Range to look like the more expensive one from Olivia’s.
In this post I will explain how I changed it from off white to black in a few easy steps.
1. Firstly purchase Rust Oleum Matt Black paint & primer in one and a narrow paint brush. Paying a little more for a paint that already includes a primer saves having to sand back the surface first.
2. Protect the glass on the mirror by covering it all with cardboard. I realised after doing this if you just unscrew the two screws on the back of the mirror the entire frame comes away from the glass, so do this instead as its far easier! I did it this way for the second coat.
3. Wipe down down all the white surface with a dry cloth just to make sure the area is clear of any dust before you start to paint.
4. Apply two coats for a better finish. I found one coat wasn’t quite enough. Reassemble the mirror after the second coat has dried thoroughly. It says 8hrs+ it will be touch dry but leave 16hrs+ for it to be completely dry, you don’t want any of your fingerprints all over it.
5. The finished mirror should look like the below. I am extremely happy with the end product and it only cost me £70.98 for the mirror and paint. I already had a paint brush but those are really cheap to pick up locally anyway.
I really hope you enjoyed my first ever quick DIY project to my blog. Let me know in the comments below if you have done anything like this. I’d really love to see your before and after photos too! Once our hallway is complete I will update you with the finished look with the mirror in place.
